Thriving nature
By 2025, we will be deforestation-free and carbon neutral
Deforestation is one of the biggest causes of global warming. It emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere through the "slash and burn" method for clearing forests, and at the same time reduces the amount of trees that will absorb carbon dioxide.
The reality of climate change - deforestation, carbon emissions - is a real threat to the cocoa ecosystem, the lives of farmers and, ultimately, the taste of cacao. The only way to overcome it is to let nature do what it has been doing for millions of years: thrive. A difficult challenge for humanity, which must work to limit its impact in order to allow nature to flourish. By doing so, we will offer the world quality chocolates that will not damage, but will help us maintain a liveable planet for generations to come.
Time is not on our side. Today, we have no choice but to be collectively on our way to carbon neutral chocolates. This is why we have developed the “Thriving Nature” program: Farmers and chefs, together, we let nature thrive. All protectors of the diversity and intensity of cacao flavors.
To meet this crucial challenge, we are committed to working towards measuring the following impacts:
By year 1 | By year 3-5 | By year 5 |
---|---|---|
% of deforestation free farming lands | Tonnes of CO2 sequestred | Farmer awareness raising sessions on environmental protection |
Number of trees planted/distributed | % of high risk farmers proven to be out of deforested areas | Distribution and planting of cocoa and non-cocoa trees to restore farms |
Number of farmers trained on environmental issues | Distribution of cleaner energy cookstoves in farmer homes | |
GPS farm mapping to ensure cocoa is not being sourced from forest land |
Over 5 years 100% of the CO2 emissions from the cocoa in our chocolate will be sequestred. All cocoa supplied within our Pureté range will be carbon neutral.
For the next 5 years, we are committed to capture CO2e thanks to our special projects:
2018-2019 | 2019-2020 | 2020-2021 | 2021-2022 | 2022-2023 |
---|---|---|---|---|
1,575 tonnes of CO2 sequestred | 3,763 tonnes of CO2 sequestred | 4,925 tonnes of CO2 sequestred | 5,300 tonnes of CO2 sequestred | 5,300 tonnes of CO2 sequestred |
By 2025, 3,500 West African farmers will have been trained to ensure sustainable agricultural practices to let nature thrive :
